Unlike actors, musicians largely only appear in public as themselves. They build their careers — and public images — on their own personalities and idiosyncrasies.
So unlike at the Oscars, Golden Globes and Emmys, where actors usually conform to the expected hyperformal dress code, musicians compromise their personal styles less at their own event — and outfits at the Grammys, as a result, can range from open-collar casual to black-tie-and-ball-gown elegant to eccentric to barely there to truly wild.
On Sunday night at the Grammys in Los Angeles, there were hats, there were leotards, there was a baby in a custom Versace gown. Here are the Style team’s favorite looks of the evening.
Miley Cyrus in metal
Every awards show has a “one for the history books” type of look, and this ensemble on Miley Cyrus is just that: an unusual and sexy draping of metal by Maison Margiela, which showed a breathtaking fashion show during couture week in January. You can’t underestimate the alchemy of a musician with one of the biggest songs of the year wearing a brand that just had the biggest fashion show of the year, but her teased-up hair is what makes this look transcendent. A little weird, very beautiful, somehow out of time — a perfect awards show look. — Rachel Tashjian

End of carouselHazel Monét with her mom (and dad!)
Hazel Monét became the Grammys’ youngest-ever nominee this year for her performance on the song “Hollywood” alongside her mother Victoria Monét and the legendary R&B group Earth, Wind & Fire, and she celebrated accordingly with a bronze Versace dress that matched her mother’s structured, strapless gown of the same color. On the red carpet, Hazel hid her face from photographers and onlookers, reminding viewers everywhere that even the highest-achieving toddlers are still toddlers. — Ashley Fetters Maloy
Coi Leray raised the bar
Coi Leray jumped on the no-pants trend with a high cut look from YSL. The muppet-adjacent green jacket drives the point home: This woman is new, she’s hot and she’s ready to have a really good time. Not too serious, but seriously cute. — Shane O’Neill
Olivia Rodrigo went classic
Sometimes on the red carpet, you see someone who looks dressed to win. Olivia Rodrigo did just that tonight. She wore a white vintage Versace classic silhouette, for a night that will probably produce photos she’ll look at for a lifetime. — Lindsey Underwood

Boygenius went matchy-matchy
The three women of Boygenius love to coordinate in black and white. But on Sunday, they arrived matchier than usual — in ivory moire Thom Browne suits. — A.F.M.
Joni Mitchell is still timeless
Joni Mitchell is at the Grammys to perform (and win, for best folk album!), and she arrived looking like her perfect mystical soothsayer self. Her velvet jacket and pants are embroidered with mystical gold figures; her jewelry is gold and jade, and her cane has a wolf on the handle. She looks as timeless and special as her music. — R.T.
Peso Pluma got it just right
At awards shows, some men do too much, most men do too little, and few get it right. Peso Pluma, who won for best Mexicana album, also won my Goldilocks award for doing menswear just right in a simple yet interesting jacket by Louis Vuitton. — S.O.
Sofia Richie Grainge keeps it clean
Sofia Richie Grainge, whose wedding — and, well, life — have been the envy of TikTok, recently announced her pregnancy. She took to the carpet as the epitome of clean girl glamour: her hair middle parted, slicked back into a bun, dressed in simple black. — L.U.
